A thank you to Borland Groover Clinic from Sihanok Hospital

After several days of doing therapeutic endoscopic procedures , and helping to establish the first ERCP program in Cambodia, Borland Groover Clinic of Florida, where presented a plaque thanking Dr. Groover and all the partners and nurses and staff of the Borland Groover clinic for allowing this to happen.

Dr. Tek , the true teacher!!

Dr. Tek has yet again proved to be the true teacher. Upon his arrival, the doctors at the hospital swarmed into his operating room to listen to his careful and interactive teaching.

Another difficult case

We had a 42-year-old male who had an unexplained stricture of the proximal esophagus, Prior attempts at getting through the stricture had failed, a PEG tube had been placed surgically. Prior biopsies of the area were negative. All that we had was a small 30 mm dilating balloon. No dilating balloon gun was available, so this had to be done with physical pressure by the physician while another physician used the EGD scope to ensure proper placement, Thereafter, dilation was successful with direct visualization with a scope since there was no radiology availability.

Our second day at Sihanok

Today we had our second day of endoscopic procedures. The first procedure of the day was an ERCP, In a gentleman who had HIV and tuberculosis. He had a common bile duct stone which require removal.

The second case of the day, and many thereafter were common upper and lower endoscopy's. The majority of the cases today where for weight loss and unexplained diarrhea. For the ERCP, Tiffany and Angie were of great help, since the nurses and technicians at the hospital had never seen the ERCP's performed before. Three years ago though, we had trained the nurses and technicians on routine endoscopy, and for the majority of the cases done today, the nurses in and technicians at the hospital did an outstanding job. They did not require the help of our support team.

Dr Etzkorn's first ERCP in Cambodia

Today the Borland Groover Clinic team along with Dr. Etzkorn performed the first ERCP ever at the hospital WorldHOPE's Sihanok in Phenom Phen that they are visiting. The patient has had recurrent right upper quadrant pain for several years and had ultrasound which demonstrated what appeared to be a dilated common bile duct. MRCP is not available in this city, also endoscopic ultrasound is not available in the country of Cambodia. The surgeons had requested the ERCP to better understand the anatomy of the patient and to decide if surgical intervention might help in the symptomatology.

The bats of Battambang

Every night the bats of Battambang

exit from a cave and literally hundreds and thousands of bats swirl out into the evening air

Dr. Tek opens the dedicated BGC endoscopy center and of our mission

We came with the principal goal of establishing the ability to perform primary endoscopy, Both upper and lower endoscopy. Borland Groover clinic provided both upper and lower endoscopes and the scopes power supply and processing support. In addition to high definition monitor and and the scope support instruments. Additional endoscopic accessories were donated by several vendors.

With the equipment properly put in place, and appropriate training on scope care and cleaning, Dr. Tek will remain at Handa medical center to continue the endoscopic training of the physicians and nurses.

Dr. Etzkorn and the rest of the crew will then head to Phnom Penh in Cambodia, there, they will set up a new ERCP program with a donated ERCP scope. The next several days will be dedicated to instructing on scope maintenance, and the art of ERCP.

There are several patients already lined up for therapeutic ERCP.
